Things went catastrophically wrong. It was a real fiasco. We tried to {compensate|address the situation, but it was like trying to stop a tsunami with a teaspoon. We're still picking up the debris and feeling the sting of this disaster.

This problem has spiraled out of control. It's a total catastrophe. We've tried anything to fix it, but nothing seems to work. At this point, it feels like we're doomed. Frankly, I don't know what else to do. This is read more a train wreck of epic proportions.
This is So Bad, It's Funny (Not Really)
Sometimes you find yourself face-to-face with situations so terrible that you can't help but burst out chuckling. It's like your brain tries to make sense of the sheer level of destruction and just throws its hands up, opting for amusement as a coping defense.
But then, you realize that it's not really actually that amusing. It's just plain terrible. And the laughter you were experiencing morphs into a sigh.
After all is said and done, you are left with a sense of confusion. You wonder about the meaning of it all. Was this a joke?
Or were we just simply unfortunate enough to witness this spectacle unfold?
Tragedy of Epic Proportions
The earthquake struck without warning, destroying entire villages in its path. Buildings crumbled like sandcastles, and the roar that followed was deafening. Dreadful Day Ever
It all started with a case of bedhead hair. I couldn't do it to look presentable. As I was running out the door, I stumbled and dropped my lunch all over myself. To make matters worse, I was totally running behind for school.
I in a state of utter panic. My {boss|friend|was absolutely furious. I tried to explain, but it was no use.
The rest of the day was an absolute nightmare. was a catastrophe. I stay awake.
By the time I got home, I was exhausted. This day, this horrific day will be forever remembered as the worst day ever.

It all started out badly with a simple mishap/incident/screw-up. But then things went from bad to absolutely terrible. A series/chain/cascade of unfortunate/awful/disastrous events unfolded/occurred/piled on top each other, leaving me feeling like I was in a nightmare/horror movie/comedy of errors. It's the kind of situation where you just want to scream into a pillow.
